Hakkoda Ropeway Travel Guide
Located in central Aomori, this impressive ropeway lift leads up to the dizzying heights of Mt.Hakkoda, one of the most famous summits in Japan which reaches 1585 meters above sea level. Taking the ropeway offers some stunning views, and delivers you up to some adventurous hiking trails.
From the upper station, hikers have access to a circuit leading up to a patch of marshland near the peak, as well as some longer routes which lead down the mountain. Head on to the Kenashitai route to see more the mountain marshlands — which really come ablaze with color in fall — and finish at the sulphuric baths of the secluded Sukayu Onsen traditional inn.
All of these adventures are available for a very reasonable price; return tickets are 2000 yen for adults and 700 for children. To travel only one way, those prices drop to 1250 and 450 yen. September and October are the best times to visit for gorgeous autumnal colors.
However, if you visit in the winter you can combine the winter walks with a visit to Hakkoda Ski Resort. Lying-in the north face of the mountain, this resort is known for its rugged trails which are largely wild and off-piste: the sort of powdery place that advanced skiers and snowboarders dream of! This is one of only 2 places in Japan to see the famous Snow Monsters: formations made when cold winds coat the trees nice and snow.
Whether you ride the ropeway for a pleasant stroll through nature, or to tackle some of the most high-octane snow sports in Japan, there’s plenty to see and do on this fantastically wild mountain.
