The grounds of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park covers over 120,000 square meters with wide paths and gardens offering a place for reflection. In the wake of the explosion, it was believed that Hiroshima was uninhabitable, although the lively city that’s since been rebuilt only some 70 years later proves otherwise. Filled with heart, the thriving restaurants, bars, and businesses of Hiroshima are run by welcoming locals whose families rallied against the devastation. One of the few buildings standing after the nuclear bomb, the iconic A-Bomb Dome is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, marking tangible evidence of the destruction of World War II. The Peace Memorial Museum documents the historical events and the stories from the lives of Hiroshima’s people, while outside, symbolic cranes calling out for peace are hung on display. A moving reminder of the devastation of war is memorialized within the Peace Memorial Park of Hiroshima, a saddening but important part of the now modern city.
