Full of restaurants, shops, and attractions like the Golden Gai and the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, Shinjuku is one of Tokyo’s most exciting neighborhoods. Here is where you’ll meet Chieko, a certified cooking instructor specializing in Japanese cuisine who will teach you what you need to know to make a scrumptious meal with several dishes! While living abroad, Chieko noticed that, although many people were interested in Japanese food, few knew how to make it. This inspired her to start teaching Japanese cooking in English to visitors and enthusiasts of Japanese food.
Before cooking, choose your menu!
1. Okonomiyaki and yakisoba with side dishes: Okonomiyaki is a savory concoction made of batter, chopped cabbage and other ingredients sizzled on a teppan grill and served with sauces and toppings, while yakisoba is a stir-fried dish with ramen noodles, typically paired with pork and vegetables covered in a sweet and savory sauce. You'll also make side dishes will be added to complete the set.
2. Gyoza and takoyaki with side dishes: The gyoza you'll make for this menu are pan-fried gyoza. You'll also make takoyaki (Japanese octopus balls). This street food is famous in Osaka and is one of the more popular foods you'll find at Japanese summer festivals.
3. Rolled sushi: Gone are the days of store-bought sushi! Roll and chop your own sushi pieces and pair them with either yellowtail fish or chicken teriyaki and miso soup.
4. Traditional gozen set: This menu has a little of everything! Make one meat dish, one fish dish, smaller side dishes, miso soup and onigiri. Perfect for those who want to learn how to make a rounded home-cooked Japanese meal.
5. Beef and potato nikujaga set: A hearty, steamy bowl of goodness, nikujaga consists of a dashi broth base topped with braised beef and chunks of potato, carrot and onion. Side dishes you'll prepare include tamagoyaki, miso soup and onigiri.
